The South of France and the Italian riviera are rich in history going back to the Roman times and even before. It is the viewpoint of the historian that Via Nissa often seeks. Someone who know the background and context and can explain it in a way that makes sense, often to those with limited historical knowledge or that long forgetten. Nothing brings alive a region like a good historian who can explain why things developed the way they did. As an example, during a recent visit to the French : Italian border, a historian provided a lunchtime presentation that explained the history between the two countries, the various wars including the second world war and the exodus of Jews from the East over centuries. Today, that history is being rewritten by the immense illegal immigration of Africans, who with limited prospects, unfavorable demographics and land being destroyed by climate change are seeing no alternative but to follow the legions of others who made an exodus from their homelands in search of a better future. |
